Complications to store healthcare data

Healthcare data breaches could lead to identity theft; the study finds

A recent study by researchers from Michigan State and Johns Hopkins indicated that violation of healthcare data could lead to identity theft. They suggest that more than 70% of healthcare data of the U.S which was violated included demographic and financial information.

Big data in healthcare is of significant importance. It brings hope for healthcare research for treatment innovation, drug discovery, optimal patient care, and personalized medicine. Companies invest billions of dollars to acquire large amounts of data, but this large amount of data can possess a threat to the identity of the person.

Media always emphasize on patients affected due to data hacking, but nobody sees the kind of data hacked and its consequential effects.

The researchers said that when the data of health care companies are retrieved it not only gives criminals access to health data but also sensitive demographic or financial information which undermines patient’s personal and financial security.

This kind of identity theft will not affect patients but their personal details will be at risk. Their credit card number, bank account details, social security number, their personal details can be used in the hidden web.

To have a closer view, the researchers took the data of hacks occurred between 2009 and 2019. They found that 71% of hacks in the past ten years have captured the identity and financial data of around 159 patients.

The way out to this kind of theft is to store the data on the cloud rather than locally saving it. Only the necessary data of the patients should be stored. Companies storing data in the cloud if also maintains tools against hacking will help to slow down the number of hackings against healthcare data.
